Saudi-backed LIV Golf is extending its footprint in Asia with the newly announced International Series Japan, scheduled for May 8-11 at Caledonian Golf Club in Chiba. The $2 million tournament will follow just days after LIV’s inaugural event in South Korea, marking the organization’s first venture into the Japanese market.

“There is no doubt that Japan plays a key role in the global golf ecosystem,” said Cho Minn Thant, commissioner and chief executive of the Asian Tour. “We are confident that this new event will not only exhibit world-class golf in front of Japanese fans, but also showcase Japan to our global audience.”

The LIV Golf Korea event is set for May 2-4, creating a back-to-back Asian swing for the controversial circuit.

LIV has created significant division within professional golf by offering enormous financial incentives that have attracted many prominent players away from the PGA Tour. Representatives from the PGA Tour, LIV Golf, and their Saudi backers—the Public Investment Fund (PIF)—continue lengthy negotiations in an effort to resolve the sport’s fragmentation.
